There are five ranks you may advance to in Star Trek Online: Lieutenant, Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain and Admiral.

For each rank, there are ten Grades, from 1-10. For example, an officer may be a Lieutenant, Grade 5.

As you advance in Grade, you will gain new abilities. As you advance in Rank, you will unlock new ships, items and locations.

You must spend your Skill Points to advance in Rank and Grade. Unspent points do not count toward your rank in Starfleet or the Klingon Empire. If you have enough skill points to increase Rank, but have yet to spend the skill points, you're considered Grade 0 - i.e. you are an LC 0 until you've spent the skill points to become LC 1.
